I worked at: being the most awesome receptionist/operations person ever at a web company called Feed the Monster Media that made web sites for radio stations. It was both a high and a low career point.
I wanted to be: smart and cool. and to someday go back to school. even back then.

Now I am: 37
I live in: Yokohama Japan
I am in a relationship with: me :D and lots of friends and family.
I drive: nothing right now - trains are awesome.
I work at: learning Japanese. it is a full time job. even on the weekends.
I fear: not finding a job after i graduate and my student loans
I want to be: a teacher

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?

* made all the arrangements and stayed at a guest house in Japan (as opposed to school housing)
* took Art history courses and got to study in the research centers of two museums
* saw a bunch of museums and art shows, and even found a new place of architecture around the corner of my house
* went to a summer festival and bought actual Japanese street food
* did a zazen meditation
* assembled professors for a dissertation committee
* drafted dissertation prospectus
* created a tumblr
* took five classes at one time as a graduate student
* TAed for a film class at my (new) school

Spent the whole day in recovery from last week's mid-term grading hell by watching Vampire Diaries. Oh yeah baby, that's some good crack. 1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?

What didn't I do? No, seriously though - spent 9 weeks at a Japanese language only program in the summer, presented at my first Professor-rated academic conference, did a bunch of things relating to being a single adult like finding an apartment to share, and buying my own furniture.

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I went back to look at my NY resolutions from last year (and was surprised at making them) AND surprised by what I accomplished:
- didn't make an A in Japanese the spring semester, but did in fall
- did find academic friends who I can talk to about what I'm reading - they may not know the Japanese lit, but they know the theory
- didn't get to the ocean at least once a month, but just went two days ago so it seems fresh in the memory!
- paid attention to food in the latter several months, to be sure
- walked the dog a whole lot more often, and got her to the dog park a whole lot more often - the joys of single-person pet ownership!
- got a request to submit my paper at said conference to academic journal, due in feb, so i'm kind of counting that
- worked pretty damn hard on my relationships (and I'm counting the one that ended as ending not for lack of trying, trust me), and my friendships have become amazing to me, so, you know, yay.

I wear contacts (so I touch my own eyes all the time) but I have a HUGE phobia about other people touching their own eyes. I can't watch movies where eyes are having things done to them (except through my fingers, and even then my stomach gets shaky). It can get triggered by people rubbing their eyes too much.
I have next to no clear memories of my life prior to age 8
I have a very sensitive sense of smell, and have always had trouble wearing alcohol based perfumes because even hours after I put them on and the alcohol is supposed to have burned off, I can still smell it
I was in an Oscar Meyer wiener commercial when I was a little kid, although it never aired on TV my mom let me buy a water bed with the money (I have no memory of this experience, although I do remember the water bed)
I have a fondness for fois gras even though I know I'm going straight to hell for loving it
I reread the same (often not terribly good) books hundreds of times, even though I have new books sitting on my selves
My preferred mode of being is barefoot. I even walk around the city, on the sidewalk, barefoot

It's pathetic how little I post. I feel like I post all the time. Why doesn't my brain automatically update livejournal? I'm going to redux-post graphics tomorrow just because I feel guilty. I've been spending time writing though, so it's not all in vain, it's just going somewhere else. And I suppose that's really not terribly entertaining to read about - that I'm still doing my homework.

We're going to get our christmas tree tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to the smell of the evergreen in the living room. I finally got myself together and started figuring out christmas presents (I think it's actually earlier than usual for me).

Other than than I've been huddling under blankets because it's cold and rainy (although nothing like most of the weather you guys are experiencing, our apartment is just drafty), finally getting over the last of my cold, I think, after an endless number of cups of tea.

Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy. My mind would get caught up in the narrative or the turns of the argument, and I’d spend hours strolling through long stretches of prose. That’s rarely the case anymore. Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as if I’m always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle.

oh, yeah, and on a personal note i'm still sick and not talking for fear of coughing. But I managed to finish the Japanese final AND turn in the film paper (even if I did actually forget the printed paper on my way into school, and even though i'd emailed it to myself the printers in the computer lab weren't working, so i had to actually drive back home, and drive the paper back to school, but hey, it's DONE). One more paper left and I'm home free for the semester.
