I haven't had a paid account there in a while and when mine dropped it, of course, meant any images I had in the Scrapbook disappeared as well. Luckily for me, I'd had a third-party host (Imageshack) for some time because my LJ use predated its image hosting and so I didn't have much there. However, what I remembered of it is that it was indeed clunky as hell which is why I never bothered much with it.
Of course, now Imageshack has restricted its free accounts as of last month and so I started to use Picasa. But I believe they have a storage limit as well. Luckily it goes by storage space rather than number of images as Imageshack does so I'll probably be able to put a lot there, but it's not ideal.
If you find a good place, I'd be interested in hearing about it!
